THE JOURNEY FORWARD

NAVIGATING WHAT'S NEXT IN HEALTH INFORMATION

EVERY JOURNEY NEEDS A DIRECTION

The past year was not a straight path. It was a landscape shaped by shifting priorities, emerging challenges, and new opportunities that demanded clarity and coordination.

As the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), we are committed to supporting the people keeping health information human. Our nearly 60,000 members and thousands more credentialed professionals are working at the heart of healthcare, technology, and business to make sure patient stories are accurately told, protected, and always accessible. Throughout 2025, AHIMA moved forward with purpose, charting a course that strengthened the role of health information in driving better outcomes across the healthcare system. From advancing national policy conversations to modernizing infrastructure and expanding member engagement, each step reflected intentional progress.

This annual report captures more than milestones. It reflects momentum—built through focus, collaboration, and a shared commitment to what comes next.

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT

When I look back on 2025, what stands out most is not any single initiative or milestone. It’s the people. HI professionals are generous, curious, and collaborative. We reach out to those with expertise, we find ways to build new processes together, and we show up for each other in ways that often go unrecognized but never go unnoticed.

2025 was filled with learning and progress. We prioritized equipping our members for excellence with new and expanded learning opportunities that tackle known and anticipated challenges. We explored the possibilities of AI. We expanded our support for coding. We planned with intention for future tools and resources as we increased leadership and mentoring initiatives. We prioritized connecting with members across the country, partnering with Component Associations to share updates and build relationships that will carry our profession forward for years to come. And while focused on external efforts, we were simultaneously shoring up internal processes, strengthening systems and ensuring financial stability through long-range planning.

A guiding principle for the AHIMA Board this year has been transparent, honest decision making. We listened to your feedback, tackled challenges head-on, and worked toward solutions that made engagement easier for you. What keeps this work meaningful is remembering who it’s all for. Our proximity to care gives us the opportunity to tell our patients' stories -- children managing chronic illness, new mothers working through postpartum care, patients navigating language barriers, communities traveling great distances for basic care needs.

The road ahead is full of possibility, and I know this community is ready for it. Rapidly developing technology demands that we stay curious, think big, and imagine beyond the limits we know today. I'm not worried about that. I've seen what we're capable of when we work together, and I know it's more than enough. What we accomplished together in 2025 is just the beginning. Thank you for the trust, the collaboration, and the heart you bring to our profession every day.

LEADING WITH A CLEAR COMPASS

Progress requires more than movement. It requires direction.

Throughout 2025, AHIMA focused on aligning strategy, strengthening our financial position, and advancing the infrastructure needed to support the future of the profession. These efforts were not isolated; they were connected steps along a broader journey to ensure our long-term sustainability and impact.

We expanded our voice in national policy discussions, modernized critical systems, and created new opportunities for engagement across our community. We strengthened governance and financial oversight to support smarter decision-making and long-range planning.

The result is AHIMA is better positioned, more connected, and prepared to navigate what lies ahead.

1. CHARTING THE COURSE

Setting direction through advocacy, governance, and financial strength

Before progress can happen, the path must be defined. Throughout 2025, AHIMA sharpened its direction in fundamental areas core to achieving our mission.

We elevated the national conversation around health data through the launch of National Health Data Week, demonstrating the power of health data to drive positive outcomes in the US healthcare system. We continued to advance legislative priorities with the reintroduction of the MATCH IT Act as we engaged with partners on the Patient ID Now Coalition.

We launched a new Strategic Impact Hub to hold space for transparency and accountability, providing members real-time information on strategic accomplishments, financial reporting and priority updates on the intentional work we’re doing.

We continued to refine our annual conference, experiencing strong results with AHIMA25. This keystone event was produced and delivered much more efficiently than in past years and it exceeded attendee expectations as evidenced in the 97.8 percent event satisfaction score.

These actions ensure that AHIMA is not only moving forward but doing so with clarity and purpose.

2. CROSSING NEW TERRAIN

Transforming systems and building modern capabilities

Progress often requires moving beyond familiar ground. This year, AHIMA focused on transforming core systems and building the infrastructure needed to support future growth.

We launched analytics dashboards that provide real-time insights into performance, strengthened system stability, and selected a new enterprise learning management system to support long-term scalability.

We implemented long-range financial planning, improved reporting accuracy, and strengthened oversight to support informed decision-making.

At the same time, we were tackling enhancements to technical support and data systems to improve responsiveness, efficiency, and overall service delivery, creating a more connected and future-ready organization.

3. REACHING NEW HORIZONS

Expanding impact through community, content, and growth

The impact of progress is measured by how far it reaches. This year, AHIMA expanded its influence through increased engagement, new content offerings and strong performance across programs and products.

In 2025, we evolved our peer-reviewed academic research journal, Advances in Health Information Science and Practice (AHISP), better reflecting the depth and rigor of the health information research we publish.

We dramatically increased participation across member events like Town Halls which averaged nearly 2,500 attendees, Student Open Houses and Conversations with Fellows, each offering robust opportunities to gather with our community.

We rolled out new offerings like our Virtual Coding and Artificial Intelligence Summits, trainings that equip our members to meet the evolving needs of health information.

HCPro, AHIMA’s subsidiary, showed growth in their support of revenue cycle education and business solutions for health systems, creating opportunities for enterprise solutions across the industry.

AHIMA partnered with Content With Purpose to launch Making Every Patient’s Story Matter, an innovative digital series that used inspiring stories, expert interviews, and real-world examples to explore how HI professionals are shaping the future of healthcare through innovation, collaboration, and leadership.

These milestones represent a community moving forward together, toward a broader and more connected future.

THE BOTTOM LINE

In 2025, AHIMA implemented several practices to improve our financial performance and ended the year with growth that strengthened our position.

AHIMA increased revenue by $1M and reduced operating expenses by $1.6M when compared to 2024. We accrued $800K in estimated sales taxes that were previously outstanding and were able to pay down a $4M line of credit balance. These purposeful moves positioned the organization to make strategic investments when and if opportunities arise moving forward.

As a wholly owned subsidiary, the growth from HCPro continues to contribute to AHIMA’s financial security as it pays consistent dividends. The enterprise continues to solidify, and  various enterprise opportunities exist that will allow us to more comprehensively serve the healthcare ecosystem.

THE ROAD AHEAD

CEO Dave Cella offers his perspective on the path forward.

AHIMA stands positioned to navigate the future with confidence.

Our work will be informed by our Strategic Plan and responsive to the needs of the industry and the professionals ensuring accuracy and integrity in health information. Moving into 2026, we will embrace four core strategic imperatives to direct our path. When asked what AHIMA does, our answer will be clear, concise, and compelling -- AHIMA educates, advocates, elevates careers, and demonstrates the value of health information, to employers, strategic partners, and the public.

By focusing on these four priorities, I am confident AHIMA will not only positively impact the careers of our members but also solidify our place as a driving force for positive change in healthcare.

We are moving forward with purpose—toward new opportunities, greater impact, and the next horizon.
